R.W. BROWN
Portrait of Thomas Other

This early nineteenth century painting was ripped from top to toe when the owner put his arm through it in the process of saving it from his flooded house. It is a fine family portrait, which is now almost restored to its former glory.

Process
This painting was lined on to a double layer of canvas to support the extensive damage. The original stretcher was strengthened with an extra bar.

The cleaning process required the removal of old restoration as well as discoloured varnish.

The most time consuming work was the filling of the extensive damages and retouching so that the rips are not noticeable.
