The General
This painting is a prime example of how necessary conservation can be. The painting was so discoloured from blackened dirt and varnish it was not possible to see the painting at all.
Its quality was completely obscured.
Process
The blackened dirt and varnish were removed with the appropriate solvents. Old patches were removed with care. Previous discoloured repainting was removed and the painting was lined onto a new canvas and a new stretcher.
The painting was then filled and retouched and varnished and the General once more came to life.
