Eighteenth Century Lady

This 18th Century painting belongs to a National Trust property in Warwickshire. The painting was in a very bad condition structurally and filthy dirty. The discolouration was caused by smoke and layers of ageing varnish. The painting had been patched and badly restored in the 19th Century and had acquired rips and punctures more recently

Process
The blackened dirt and varnish were removed slowly with appropriate solvents, revealing the soft flesh tones underneath. The old patches had to be removed before the painting was lined onto another canvas to support it.

The holes and punctures were filled and retouched and the painting was revarnished.

Once this painting was cleaned it was possible to see the shine of the pearl earrings and necklace and the sheen of the satin dress
